PODCAST: How fuel and food price hikes have affected the students?

The fuel price will increase for the fifth time this year, which will further place the entire Wits community under increased financial pressure. 

Since January 2021, the petrol price has increased by over 60% and on June 1, 2022, the petrol price increased by between R2,33 and R2,43 per litre and diesel by between R1,07 and R1,10 per litre.  

Thobeka Pearl Mugwaba is a young driven young lady from Inanda, Kwa-Zulu Natal, she is doing her second year at the Walter Sisulu University (B ed in consumer studies). Thobeka is an independent retailer selling clothes to the public through her online business Pearl’s Botique.

Pondoland Time’s Yamkela Nxazonke set down with her to find out how the fuel prices and food price increase have affected her.
