Parliament has welcomed the quick and serious actions taken by Minister in the Presidency, Dean Macpherson, and the new board of the Independent Development Trust (IDT) in response to a forensic report into the troubled R800 million oxygen plant tenders.
Chairperson of the selected Committee on Public Infrastructure, Mr Rikus Badenhorst, praised the suspension of IDT Chief Executive Officer, Ms Tebogo Malaka, as a sign that accountability is finally being enforced at a high level. The decision follows findings by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which revealed serious procurement violations, non-compliance with medical regulations, and the use of forged documents.
Minister Macpherson launched the investigation in January, shortly after concerns were raised about the oxygen plant contract. Mr Badenhorst commended him for acting early and for setting a clear example of responsible leadership.
The IDT’s new board, led by Ms Zimbini Hill, has also received support from the committee for its commitment to fair and lawful internal processes. The board has promised transparency and legal compliance as it works to rebuild the institution’s credibility.
Mr Badenhorst stated that Parliament will continue to monitor the matter. “This must go beyond suspensions. We need a full review of procurement systems to prevent future abuse,” he said.
He added, “This is the kind of leadership that restores trust and sets South Africa back on track as a country building its future.”
