Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Transport has expressed serious concern over the Road Accident Fund (RAF) interim board’s decision to suspend the entire management team. The board, appointed in July 2025, appeared before the committee on 11 November, to present its annual audit report.
What Happened
The RAF interim board was summoned to Parliament to account for its leadership decisions and present the fund’s annual audit report. Committee Chairperson Donald Selamolela criticised the suspensions, saying the board failed to provide a logical or legally sound explanation for its actions. “What makes the suspensions laughable is the fact that the interim board was unable to logically explain their decisions,” said Selamolela.
He further noted that the board claimed ministerial approval for the suspensions but could not produce documentation to support this assertion.
Official Response
Selamolela warned that the board’s actions appeared to disregard legislative requirements governing interim appointments.
“It seems the board has started on a wrong footing, without following proper prescripts,” he said.
He urged the interim leadership to avoid becoming a source of instability within the RAF, emphasising that the committee would recall them to address unresolved issues related to the annual report and the appointment of interim CEO Victor Songelwa.
Community Impact
The RAF remains one of South Africa’s most critical entities in compensating victims of road accidents. Ongoing leadership disputes and management instability could delay claim processing and affect thousands of beneficiaries nationwide. The committee reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability and restoring operational confidence in the fund.
