Heavy rainfalls in Gauteng has destroyed some parts of the province leaving over 300 residents in Soweto homeless due to the damage caused by the floods.
This follows after the Weather Service issued a level 6 warning for strong winds, disruptive rainfall and possible localized flooding.
The City of Tshwane is monitoring the situation and urge residents to avoid using some routes due to the floods.
“Residents have been warned to stay away from low-laying areas. Emergency services are high alert”.
“We have got our disaster management monitoring teams in all those areas. Our 13 stations are fully operational, we have got a specialized unit, the swift water rescue crew unit is also on high alert” said Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.
Meanwhile, The City of Joburg MMC for Human Settlements says they are looking for temporary placements and shelters for residents that were affected by these rainfalls. He says they are working to secure a community hall to temporary house residents [source: ewn].
No fatalities have been reported.
“Even though we have not recorded any fatalities, we are still encouraging our motorists out there to continue to be cautious on the roads, extend a state following distance and also try and avoid crossing roads and bridges that might be flooded said Mulaudzi.”
