Over 10,000 Lives Lost on South African Roads in 2024, Minister Creecy Reveals
The alarming statistic was revealed by Creecy, alongside her deputy, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, on Sunday, during the launch of the Department of Transport's festive season road safety campaign.

More than 10,000 lives have been lost on South Africa’s roads in 2024, according to Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy. The alarming statistic was revealed by Creecy, alongside her deputy, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, on Sunday, during the launch of the Department of Transport’s festive season road safety campaign.

The campaign, which aims to reduce road accidents and fatalities, was unveiled in the presence of transport MECs from several provinces. The theme for this year’s initiative is ‘Every Day Without a Road Death – South Africa 2024.’ The focus areas for the campaign include the strategic deployment of law enforcement officers and heightened awareness initiatives to ensure safer travel during the festive season.

Minister Creecy confirmed that as of now, 10,154 people have tragically died on the country’s roads in 2024. “The high number of road crashes and the related consequences have a significant impact on South African society,” Creecy said.

The impact is measured in terms of human lives lost, pain, grief, and suffering, and it also comes at a significant cost to the economy.

In response, the campaign aims to address the root causes of road accidents and improve safety measures, calling on all South Africans to be vigilant and responsible on the roads.
