The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality, together with Kumkani Mhlontlo, Nyandeni, Port St John’s, and Ingquza Hill municipalities, held a Spaza Shops Fund Awareness Campaign at OR Tambo Hall on 21 october 2025.
The campaign focused on helping local spaza shop owners and township traders learn how to access financial support through the Spaza Shops Support Fund, a government programme designed to boost small businesses and township economies.
Participants received practical guidance on how to apply for funding, register businesses, and access mentorship opportunities that can help them operate sustainably.
Official Response
Municipal leaders praised the campaign as a key step in advancing economic inclusion and self-reliance across the OR Tambo District.
“Our goal is to empower local traders with the right information and tools. When small businesses thrive, our communities grow stronger,” said a KSD economic development official.
The event formed part of ongoing local government efforts to formalize informal trading, create jobs, and support entrepreneurship in under-resourced areas.
Community Impact
Entrepreneurs welcomed the initiative, saying it opened new opportunities to access funding and training that were previously out of reach. Many attendees expressed optimism about expanding their businesses and contributing to job creation within their communities.
The collaboration between municipalities also mentioned the region’s united approach to tackling economic challenges through shared resources and coordinated development programmes.
