On 11 September 2025, the Integrated Human Settlements and Waste Management unit of OR Tambo District Municipality held a community workshop at the Mduduzi Nkwakhwa Community Hall in Matheko, Ward 24. The session aimed to equip residents with knowledge about proper waste management, recycling, and opportunities in waste collection.
What Happened
Officials from OR Tambo District Municipality, the Department of Economic Development & Environmental Affairs, Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, and SASSA led the session. Learners from Matheko Primary School and local residents attended, engaging in discussions on how to keep communities clean and how proper waste management can create jobs.

Speakers emphasized five key areas:
- The importance of keeping communities clean.
- Recycling and reuse of waste.
- Preventing and controlling veld fires, which contribute to air pollution.
- Protecting plants and animals as part of environmental conservation.
- The role of cleanliness in boosting tourism and local economic growth.
SASSA representatives also used the platform to remind residents about their available services.
Community Impact
The discussion turned lively when residents raised concerns about the irresponsible dumping of disposable diapers across the area. Community members called for designated disposal sites, stressing the health risks and environmental impact of scattered waste. Local women in attendance expressed relief that the matter was finally being addressed, with hopes that solutions will soon follow.
