The Nyandeni Local Municipality is making strong progress in improving lives through its rural housing programme, with a focus community development. Central to this effort is the Nyandeni 370 Disaster Response Housing Project, which has already delivered 180 homes to families in need.
The project, initially led by the Department of Human Settlements, faced delays due to an underperforming contractor. Following this, the Municipality stepped in to manage the project directly, ensuring smoother delivery and closer alignment with community needs. Now covering nearly 80% of the Municipality’s wards, the initiative is bringing visible change to the area.
Beyond providing shelter, the programme restores a sense of pride and stability to vulnerable households. It also opens doors to vital services like electricity, water, sanitation, and roads—necessities that many rural communities have lacked for generations.
Importantly, the project supports local economic development. Small and emerging contractors from the area have been tasked with construction, creating jobs and boosting local skills. This approach not only accelerates the building process but also encourages community ownership of the development.
Nyandeni Municipality views the project as more than just a housing initiative, it is a foundation for long-term social and economic upliftment. The commitment remains clear: to build not just homes, but stronger, more resilient communities across the region.
