The Nyandeni Local Municipality supported by O.R. Tambo District is responding urgently to alarming food safety concerns following recent incidents affecting local students. Eight students from Mount Nicholas Primary School were hospitalized after consuming snacks from the school’s tuck shop, raising serious alarms about food quality.
This troubling incident follows a previous case in which a child from Thungwini location experienced severe health complications after eating chips from a local vendor. The tuck shop owner claims to source products from a supplier in KwaZulu-Natal, but an investigation is currently underway to assess the situation.
“Our students’ health and well-being are our top priority, and we will not tolerate negligence that puts them at risk,” Councillor Matika from Nyandeni Local Muncipality stated.
Local health inspectors and law enforcement are collaborating to conduct thorough investigations to identify the root causes of these food safety violations.
The municipality has issued a stern warning to all food suppliers and vendors, emphasizing that stringent measures will be implemented to protect children from unsafe food. Failure to comply with safety regulations will result in serious consequences, including legal action and potential license revocation.
Parents and guardians are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious food products or practices, as the municipality seeks to ensure a safer environment for the youth of Nyandeni.
