Nyandeni Local Municipality hosted its annual year-end celebration for senior citizens on 26 November 2026. The event took place at the Mayihlume Elderly Centre in Mngamnye No.1, Ward 30. The celebration aimed to honour the elderly and show that the municipality cares for their wellbeing.
What Happened
The gathering brought together elderly groups from across Nyandeni. The municipality used the event to show the role of senior citizens in shaping families and communities. Officials also handed over building materials to help improve the Mayihlume Elderly Centre.
The donation included:
- 50 bags of cement
- 45 boxes of 60×40 tiles
- 15 boxes of 40×40 tiles
- 300 M6 building blocks
- 30 bags of tile adhesive (Tylon)
- 24 Nutec ceiling boards
- 6 bandrings
- 25 cornices
- 30 joining strips
- 8 packets of ceiling nails
- 15 packets of size 3 nails
- 1 load of sand
These materials will help the centre repair its infrastructure and create safer spaces for elderly programmes.
Christmas Gifts for Centres
In addition to the building materials, the municipality delivered Christmas food parcels to all elderly centres in Nyandeni. Each centre received:

- Samp (12.5kg ×2)
- Beans (5kg ×2)
- Sugar (12.5kg ×2)
- Rice (10kg ×2)
- Flour (12.5kg ×2)
- 1L long-life milk (×2)
- Cooking oil (5L ×2)
- Ricoffy (1kg ×2)
- Freshpak tea (80 bags)
- Potatoes (10kg ×2)
- 4 cabbages
- Carrots (5kg ×4)
- Chicken meat (10kg ×2)
- One foldable walking stick
Community Impact
The donations will support feeding programmes, improve centre facilities, and ensure that elderly members enjoy a dignified festive season. The municipality said it remains committed to strengthening programmes that uplift older persons.
