Community advocate Ntando Mlaleli, founder of the Philisa Imbokodo Women’s Shelter, has been nominated for the Specialised Care category in the 2025 South African Heroes Awards.
Mlaleli has dedicated her life to supporting victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and rape. Since 2017, she has opened her own home in the Amadiba Administrative Area near the Wild Coast Sun to shelter survivors in need. Her work has served the wider Bizana area, offering safety and hope where few alternatives exist.
Her nomination carries special significance: one of the women helped by the shelter personally put her name forward, reflecting the life-changing impact of her efforts. “Her dedication is unequalled,” said one community member who credited Mlaleli with restoring dignity to women who had lost hope.
Despite challenges, Mlaleli continues to provide refuge while actively seeking a permanent site for the organisation. Her vision is to expand Philisa Imbokodo into a fully equipped centre for victims of abuse in Alfred Nzo District.
Members of the public are encouraged to support her nomination. To vote, SMS SAHA 024 to 47439. Voting lines are open until 20 November 2025.
