National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Board Chairperson Dr. Karen Stander has resigned with immediate effect, raising serious questions about governance and internal conduct at the organization. Her exit comes just months after the new board was appointed to restore stability.

What Happened?

The Department of Higher Education and Training confirmed that Dr. Karen Stander resigned on 02 November 2025, citing governance concerns and a toxic work environment at NSFAS.

Her resignation letter reportedly includes claims of bullying, intimidation, racism, and threats to personal safety, signaling deep divisions within the financial aid body.

The resignation follows a turbulent year for NSFAS, which has faced criticism over delayed payments, administrative inefficiencies, and the recent dissolution of the previous board.

DA Calls for Independent Investigation

Democratic Alliance MP and spokesperson on Higher Education, Dr. Delmaine Christians, called for immediate intervention by Minister Blade Nzimande.

“The minister has to establish an independent investigation into these allegations raised by Dr. Stander – preferably one led by a credible, external figure,” said Christians.
“It must have clear terms of reference, a set timeline, and full transparency to Parliament.”

She further urged the minister to implement an operational stabilization plan and ensure that whistleblowers are protected within NSFAS.

What This Means for Students

Although the leadership shake-up does not immediately affect funding disbursements, students are advised to stay updated through the official NSFAS website and verified announcements.

The Department of Higher Education is expected to appoint an interim chairperson to maintain operations and accountability.
