The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape extended a hand of hope to Mpongo Primary School in McClean Town, East London, through an outreach initiative led by Court Preparation Officer Ms. Maki Menqe from the East London Magistrates’ Court.

Inspired by Mandela Month and carried into Women’s Month, the programme focused on empowering learners, especially girls, by teaching them about their rights, the justice system and career opportunities. Situated in a disadvantaged area with limited access to basic services, Mpongo Primary was chosen to deliver the message: “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”

The event was a collaborative effort supported by SAPS, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Community Police Forum, the Department of Education, the School Governing Body, private attorneys and Legal Aid South Africa. Together, they engaged with 200 learners through motivational talks, guidance on court processes and advice on how to speak out against abuse.

Learners received hygiene packs containing essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and face cloths, while girls were also given sanitary pads. The smiles and gratitude from the children reflected the impact of the initiative, which showed the power of unity and compassion. As the day ended, the message was clear: it takes a whole community to raise and protect its children.
