South African author, publisher and literary advocate Nomawele Njongo is currently in Moscow, Russia, as part of a national delegation selected by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to represent the country at the Moscow International Book Fair, taking place from 4–7 December 2025.
Njongo, who travelled earlier this week, joins 11 other South African authors, officials from the Department, and representatives from the National Library of South Africa. Their participation forms part of a national effort to promote South African literature, strengthen international publishing ties and increase the visibility of local storytelling on global platforms.

The Moscow International Book Fair is one of the world’s most significant literary gatherings, attracting leading authors, publishers, agents and cultural organisations. South Africa’s presence provides an opportunity to highlight its multilingual literature, diverse creative voices and growing literary influence.
Njongo is widely respected for her work in developing young writers and expanding access to African literature. Through the Africa Teen Authors Book Initiative (ATABI), she helps nurture emerging storytellers across the continent. She also leads KwaziThina Publishers and is a key organiser of the Funda Mpondo International Literary Festival, which promotes reading and cultural expression in the Eastern Cape.

She has previously represented South Africa at major events, including the Turin International Book Fair in Italy, further cementing her reputation as an important cultural ambassador. Speaking ahead of her journey, Njongo said the experience represents both pride and responsibility.
“It is an honour to be part of this delegation. This journey is about building connections, exchanging ideas, and sharing South African stories with the world,” she said.
The South African delegation is participate in business-of-publishing sessions, networking engagements and cultural exchanges. Their presence underscores the country’s commitment to expanding its literary footprint and celebrating the power of African storytelling on an international stage.
