Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality held a high-level meeting on 5 November 2025 at the Zwide Rent Office to prepare for the rapid installation of streetlights across the Metro. The session brought together Mayoral Committee Member for Electricity and Energy, Councillor Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, ward councillors, and appointed contractors. The gathering aimed to strengthen coordination and speed up delivery.
What Happened
Councillor Mnqokoyi met with councillors from the Champion Galela Cluster and four legally appointed contractors tasked with driving the rollout. Two contractors will focus on national roads, while the other two will handle residential streets.
The leaders stressed the need to prioritise high-mast lights, noting that these installations bring wide-area visibility and improve night-time safety. The meeting ended on a positive note, with all stakeholders aligning on timelines and responsibilities to ensure uninterrupted progress.
Official Response
Councillor Mnqokoyi welcomed the collaboration and urged residents to support the rollout.
“Streetlighting is a basic service that strengthens safety and restores dignity. We ask communities to work hand-in-hand with their councillors to protect municipal assets,” she said.
She also called for the safeguarding of contractors: “Let’s create safe working conditions so that teams can complete their tasks without disruption.”
Community Impact
The rollout is expected to improve visibility in key hotspots, reduce crime risks, and enhance mobility after dark. Furthermore, the installation of high-mast lights will help create safer public spaces for pedestrians, commuters, and local businesses.
