The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has pledged urgent financial and humanitarian support to flood-affected communities in the Eastern Cape following the devastating floods of 10 June 2025. The floods claimed lives, displaced families, and severely disrupted basic services in several municipalities including Mthatha (King Sabata Dalindyebo), Mnquma, Mbhashe, Great Kei, and Amahlathi.
To demonstrate its commitment, a high-level delegation led by NLC Board Chairperson Prof Barney Pityana and Commissioner Ms Jodi Scholtz is visiting the OR Tambo District and the AbaThembu Kingdom on Friday, 27 June 2025. The visit includes a courtesy call to His Majesty King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo at the Nkululekweni Royal Residence and meetings with local stakeholders to reaffirm the Commission’s support for recovery efforts.
“In response, the NLC is activating its Research-Based Funding Model, which allows for emergency funding without a formal application process,” said Prof Pityana. “This enables rapid humanitarian interventions in disasters that severely affect communities.”
As part of its response, the NLC has appointed the Small Projects Foundation (SPF) to carry out a high-impact relief programme worth R10 million. With over 36 years of experience in the Eastern Cape, SPF has a proven track record in health, education, and social development, and works closely with government departments, clinics, and schools across the province.
Relief efforts will include:
- Food parcels
- Clean water
- Clothing
- School uniforms and supplies
- Sanitary pads
- Essential healthcare support
Commissioner Jodi Scholtz noted that trained field teams will ensure that relief reaches displaced and vulnerable households across nine municipalities through a coordinated and accountable process.
“The Commission aims to restore dignity, bring relief, and contribute to the recovery and rebuilding of lives disrupted by this disaster,” said Scholtz.
