Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has rejected allegations that the country violates religious freedom.
He told CNN on Tuesday night that extremists in Nigeria attack both Muslims and Christians, not one faith alone. Idris said portraying the violence as religious persecution misrepresents the country’s complex security realities.
What Happened
During his interview, the Minister dismissed what he called “faulty data and wrong assumptions” from certain foreign officials, including some in the United States.
He said such claims ignore the facts — that terrorist groups in Nigeria strike civilians without religious discrimination.
“Yes, there are Christians being attacked,” Idris said. “But these criminals also target Muslims, especially in the northern part of the country.”
Idris cautioned that spreading inaccurate reports helps extremists achieve their goal of sowing distrust among citizens.
Official Response
The Minister urged global audiences to view Nigeria’s crisis through an accurate, balanced lens.
He reminded viewers that freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and forms part of the nation’s identity.
“Labeling the attacks as Christian persecution drives division,” he warned. “It is wrong to portray Nigeria as a country that rejects religious freedom.”
Security and Development Efforts
Idris said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is taking firm steps to strengthen security.
He mentioned new investments in military hardware, agriculture, and social programmes aimed at tackling unrest through both force and dialogue.
He added that the recent appointment of new service chiefs reflects a renewed push to build a stronger defence network.
“There is fresh momentum and determination to make Nigeria safe for everyone,” Idris said.
The Bigger Picture
Since 2009, Nigeria has battled extremist violence from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
However, the Minister said government action now combines security operations, social development, and community cooperation to move the country toward peace and stability.
