The Ngqushwa Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Health held a Customary Male Initiation Training to promote safety, hygiene, and cultural integrity ahead of the summer initiation season. The workshop brought together Traditional Surgeons, Nurses, and Leaders to strengthen coordination and ensure responsible initiation practices.
What Happened?
On 12 November 2025, the training session, hosted in Ngqushwa, aimed to enhance safe and compliant initiation practices throughout the municipality. Facilitator Mr. Rumbu from the Department of Health led discussions on legal and health regulations that govern initiation schools.
Participants were reminded of the importance of adhering to provincial health guidelines and maintaining strong partnerships with health practitioners to minimize risks during the initiation process.
“Our goal is to preserve culture while protecting life. Collaboration between traditional and health sectors is essential to prevent unnecessary loss,” said Mr. Rumbu.

Ngqushwa Local Municipality commended the active participation of traditional leaders and practitioners. Municipal representatives emphasized that community safety remains a top priority as the initiation season approaches.
