O.R. Tambo District Pays Tribute at National Wreath Laying Ceremony

On 27 October 2025, leaders from the O.R. Tambo District Municipality joined the nation in paying tribute to Oliver Reginald Tambo, one of South Africa’s most respected liberation icons. The national O.R. Tambo Annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony took place at Tamboville Cemetery, celebrating Tambo’s enduring contribution to freedom and unity.

What the Ceremony Commemorates

The solemn event, themed “O.R. Tambo: Champion of Freedom, Architect of Global Solidarity,” reflected on Tambo’s moral courage, international leadership, and vision for a just society.

A delegation from the O.R. Tambo District, led by Executive Mayor Mesuli Ngqondwana and Ingquza Hill Mayor Cllr Nonkosi Pepping, represented the Eastern Cape region that proudly carries Tambo’s name.

Step-by-Step: District’s Continued O.R. Tambo Month Activities

  1. Community Dialogues: Local municipalities host forums discussing Tambo’s values of service and unity.
  2. Youth Empowerment Projects: Schools and youth groups engage in leadership and volunteer programs.
  3. Legacy Exhibitions: Public displays in Mthatha, Port St. Johns, and Qumbu highlight Tambo’s life journey.
  4. Commemorative Services: Churches and civil groups hold special prayers throughout October.
  5. District Outreach Drives: Municipal teams visit communities to promote social cohesion and civic pride.

These activities form part of the O.R. Tambo Month program, reinforcing his principles of humility, integrity, and people-centred governance.

Official Response

Speaking at the ceremony, Councilor Mesuli Ngqondwana said the District remains committed to upholding Tambo’s legacy through practical community development.

“As we honour OR Tambo, we recommit ourselves to his values — service before self, unity before division, and integrity before power,” said Mayor Ngqondwana.

He added that the District’s municipalities, including Ingquza Hill, King Sabata Dalindyebo, Nyandeni, Mhlontlo, and Port St. Johns, continue to embed these principles in all local governance initiatives.

Community Impact

Residents across the O.R. Tambo District have embraced October as a month of reflection and action. Community members have joined clean-up campaigns, tree planting drives, and youth mentorship sessions inspired by Tambo’s lifelong call for self-reliance and service.

The district’s unified participation at the national ceremony symbolizes not only remembrance but also a renewal of Tambo’s vision — a South Africa grounded in justice, equality, and shared progress.
