On 24 October 2025, Pirie Mission farmers near Dimbaza celebrated a major milestone 24 October as the MEC for Agriculture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, officially handed over a multipurpose shearing shed. The facility comes through the Legislature’s Taking Legislature to the People (TLTTP) Legacy Projects under the Amathole District.
What Happened?
Fifty farmers received a fully equipped shearing shed designed to upgrade wool production, improve quality control, and increase market access.
The community’s wool association already proved its strength. Last financial year, it generated more than R350,000 in revenue — turning wool into wealth for local families.
The shed will now allow farmers to:
- Process wool locally
- Cut transport costs
- Increase income returns
- Strengthen cooperative business structures
Excitement filled the village as farmers celebrated a long-awaited investment in rural agriculture.
Official Response
MEC Kontsiwe praised the farmers’ unity and growth potential.
“Pirie farmers show what community-driven agriculture can achieve. We will continue supporting initiatives that create jobs and build rural wealth.” She said during the handover.
Members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature noted this project as a key step toward a more inclusive provincial economy.
Community Impact
Local leaders say the shed will secure livelihoods for future generations by:
- Expanding wool production
- Building skills in processing and grading
- Encouraging youth involvement in farming
Residents hope this investment sparks more agricultural development across Amathole District.
