Umzimvubu Local Municipality has embarked on a groundbreaking project to construct a new bridge in Mqokweni village, EmaXesibeni, bringing relief to residents who have endured decades of isolation due to lack of access.

For years, the community struggled to travel to nearby towns and villages, hindered by a treacherous river crossing that became impassable during heavy rains. The newly constructed road remained incomplete without a bridge, leaving residents reliant on donkeys to fetch groceries and forced to carry the sick, elderly, and deceased across the river.

During her recent oversight visit, Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Zukiswa Ndevu, announced the R8.8 million bridge project, expected to be completed within 12 months.

“This bridge will connect Ward 8 to Ward 6 in Silindini, ensuring safe passage for residents and stimulating local economic growth.”

The project has also created employment opportunities for local residents, with R280,000 allocated for labour costs. Bongiswa Mandlana, a local resident, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It’s essential for our community to benefit from these projects.”

Mqokweni Local Chief, Makhanya Ncezu, reflected on the community’s struggles, recounting instances of carrying corpses and sick individuals across the river.

“We’re grateful to the government for this bridge, which will alleviate our suffering.”

Residents like Neliswa “Patricia” Mandlana and Mamjwara Mabhayi shared their experiences of sleeping in nearby villages during rainy days, waiting for the river to subside. “We’re excited and thankful for the bridge, which will improve our lives significantly.”

The bridge’s completion promises to transform the lives of Mqokweni residents, enhancing access to essential services, economic opportunities, and reconnecting the community to the surrounding areas.
