Municipality teaches learners vital lessons on safe driving
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has taken its road safety campaign to Newton Park Primary School, where learners received practical lessons on responsible driving and passenger behavior. The awareness initiative was held this week as part of the city’s broader effort to reduce road accidents and save lives.
What Happened?
Municipal officials visited Newton Park Primary School to engage directly with learners on the importance of road safety. The program focused on simple but life-saving habits: always wearing a seatbelt, avoiding distractions while driving, obeying speed limits, and understanding the dangers of drunk driving.
By targeting primary school learners, the campaign aims to instill safe habits from a young age, creating a culture of responsibility that extends into adulthood.
Official Response
Nelson Mandela Bay Metro said the initiative forms part of its #SaferCityForAll campaign. Speaking at the event, a municipal road safety officer explained:
The municipality added that more schools across the metro will benefit from similar workshops throughout the year.
Community Impact
“Parents and teachers welcomed the program, praising its focus on early education” said one Newton Park teacher. “Children often influence their parents’ behavior, reminding them to buckle up or avoid risky driving. It’s powerful when safety starts at home.”
The campaign also supports the municipality’s long-term goal of reducing traffic accidents, which remain a major concern in the region.
