Transport Minister Barbara Creecy will officially open the Ndabakazi N2 Intermodal Interchange on Saturday, 1 November 2025. The R300-million infrastructure upgrade is expected to ease traffic flow and reduce road accidents in the region.
The opening marks the completion of a two-year project that forms part of the Department of Transport’s broader October Transport Month programme. Minister Creecy will be joined by Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and several MECs for the ceremony.
What Happened
Construction on the Ndabakazi N2 Interchange began in February 2023 and was completed in August 2025. The project has introduced a modern intermodal hub to the busy N2 corridor near Butterworth.

“This project is about more than roads—it’s about jobs, safety and long-term growth,” a departmental spokesperson said.
The Department of Transport confirmed that the project created 240 short-term jobs, prioritising local hiring and skills training in construction and road maintenance.
Community Impact
Local residents have welcomed the project for its employment benefits and safer transport infrastructure.
Many of those employed received training in construction, improving their chances of long-term employment in future projects.
The official opening will take place at 12h00 on Saturday at the Ndabakazi Interchange site.
