the Mzamba River in the Eastern Cape received a new lease on life as Pondoland Pride, joined by the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, ITHUBA Community Colleges, and dedicated locals, completed a successful river cleanup campaign. The initiative brought together environmental champions, municipal workers, and residents to restore one of Pondoland’s most scenic natural landmarks.
What Happened?
On 20 October 2025, cleanup led by environmental group Pondoland Pride, saw dozens of volunteers clear litter and debris from the Mzamba River, which runs between two local communities and is home to the region’s iconic suspension bridge.
Supported by the WeAreNature Challenge Microgrant from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), the initiative forms part of the ongoing CallToNature Campaign aimed at promoting environmental stewardship across the Eastern Cape.
Organizers highlighted that the Mzamba River holds cultural and ecological significance, often featured in film productions and even the UNESCO Photo Story Book for Citizen Science.
Official Response
Local government officials and environmental partners praised the collaboration. The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality commended the volunteers and confirmed continued support for similar community-driven environmental projects.
“This partnership proves that when the community and local government work hand-in-hand, we can make lasting environmental impact,” said Mzolisi Msuthu Madikizela, a municipal representative.
Community Impact
Residents expressed pride and renewed commitment to protecting their environment. Volunteers, including Lonwabo Dlamini, Mthobisi Mbuthuma, Balisa Tswane, and Siphokazi Mpama, worked alongside EPWP workers, showcasing the spirit of unity and sustainability.
Beyond the cleanup, organizers hope the campaign will inspire ongoing care for the river and surrounding hiking routes, helping to strengthen Pondoland’s reputation as a green tourism destination.
