A woman has been arrested for the death of her three-year-old daughter, whose lifeless body was transported in a suitcase to the Mbizana Police Station.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly left her child alone at their Mzamba home on Sunday while she went to visit her boyfriend. When she returned the next day, she claimed to have found the toddler’s lifeless body near the front door.
Rather than contacting emergency services, the woman is said to have placed the child’s body inside a suitcase. She then travelled nearly 30 kilometers by taxi to the Mbizana police station, where she reported the death. Officers were alerted immediately, and upon the opening of the suitcase and took the 32-year-old woman into custody.
Police have charged the suspect with culpable homicide, child neglect, and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. She is expected to appear in the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 May.
The incident has left the community with unanswered questions about the child’s death and the mother’s delayed response.
Police are still investigating.
