Body of 24-year-old Luyanda Cele found mutilated.

Three days after she was last seen leaving her office, a 24-year-old woman who had started an internship with the eThekwini municipality last year was found dead.

Luyanda Cele’s body was found dumped on one of Durban’s bust streets after she was last seen in the CBD on Friday afternoon.

According to a poster posted on social media for a missing person, her co-workers claimed she had left the office on Friday.

Sithabile Cele, Luyanda’s sister claimed that on Monday, police contacted the family and requested them to report at Point police station. When they arrived, police informed them that they had discovered Luyanda’s body early on Saturday morning near Durban’s well-known Metro Lodge on South Beach.

“They said she was found without her lower lip and tongue. We are told that the police are still going to be conducting a post-mortem to check what else was removed from her body and if she was raped. We are still confused about how she got there and what could have happened to her,” said Cele.

Cele said her sister had recently graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal before joining the municipality last year.

Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said Point SAPS are investigating a case of murder.

“The motive for the killing is unknown,” said Ngcobo.
