A major milestone is within reach as the Highbury Water Treatment Works in Mthatha hits 81% completion, with the project on schedule to finish by 7 November 2025.
This key infrastructure initiative, led by the OR Tambo District Municipality, is set to deliver 50 million litres of clean water daily to communities in King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) and Nyandeni local municipalities.
More than 100 local men and women have been employed during construction, while small businesses (SMMEs) involved in the project have all been paid and supported. No delays due to material shortages have been reported.
Despite facing challenges including tough rock formations, high water tables, and occasional protest action, the project team has stayed on the course.
“This is more than a construction site. It’s a promise of dignity and health to our people,” said a project official.
The plant includes both raw and treated water pump stations, as well as advanced mechanical and electrical systems. Once operational, it will significantly improve access to reliable, clean water for thousands of residents.
The Highbury project stands as a symbol of progress and resilience in the Eastern Cape—proof that, with planning and persistence, even the toughest challenges can be overcome.
