Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who attacked and killed traditional leader iNkosi Nogcinile Mtirara at Mqhekezweni Great Place in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, on Monday night.
In a separate incident during the same attack, six Grade 12 learners from the local Jongintaba High School were raped.
Mqhekezweni Great Place is the historic home of the AbaThembu nation, located in the OR Tambo District. It is renowned for being the home of Regent King Jongintaba Mtirara, who raised and mentored Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratic president.
This latest violent crime adds to a growing list of attacks in the Mthatha area, which has recently seen a surge in extortion and murder cases. Just last week, five members of a family were shot and killed in Bityi village, outside Mthatha.
