It is alleged that on Wednesday the 9th of August Nontobeko Princess Mnqali was found dead in the bushes. The police are saying the body of a woman aged 63 years old was found dead on Wednesday morning of 9th August. She was tied to a tree in an open field in Ndzongiseni Locality in Mount Ayliff.
An 18-year-old teenager was taken in for questioning by the police. A murder case is under investigation.
At about 13:00, a crowd of about 500 Ndzungiseni local community residents went to the homestead of the alleged suspect and set one house alight. Swift police response prevented the crowd from further setting more houses alight. Rubber bullets and pepper spray was used to disperse the angry crowd. As the crowd was being dispersed, a person who was part of the crowd was seen limping from the scene. He was bleeding on his legs. An ambulance was summoned however he died before receiving any treatment. He sustained an unknown wound to the back of his leg. Police have opened an inquest pending the post-mortem results.
Thursday 13 community members were arrested and appeared before Mount Ayliff court and were later released on Friday.
Ward councillor Nkululeko Xolo says as community leaders they tried to intervene before the escalation of the accident but unfortunately community members were furious beyond control.
After an incident, we visited Mnqali family then later visited the family of the suspect but unfortunately we could not find anyone. However, we were told that the mother of the suspect was brought for questioning by the police then later she was released. – said Xolo
A source says the deceased man was shot 3 times by the police using real bullets instead of rubber bullets, the community tried to rush him to the hospital but unfortunately, he died. The source further says the community is furious following this incident and demands the family of the suspect leave the community permanently.
