Mobile application concepts dominated the stage as three standout students from Buffalo City Campus (BCC) secured their places in the finals of the first-ever Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Day. The campus-level event took place at the Potsdam Site on Tuesday, 6 August.

The competition brought together 11 innovators, staff and students from diverse fields — to pitch their solution-driven ideas before a packed audience. Attendees included WSU Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, Prof. Nosisi Feza, Universities South Africa CEO Dr. Phethiwe Matutu, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) representatives, and adjudicators from the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO).

In her opening address, Prof. Feza encouraged participants to embrace creativity and bold thinking. “When you’re innovative, you can’t be normal or just like anybody else — you have to be a little bit crazy because you’re always trying to come up with clever solutions to change the world,” she said.

The three winning BCC innovators will now progress to the institutional finals, where they will compete against top entries from other WSU campuses.
