A high-level meeting held in Centane has led to a renewed crackdown on illegal initiation schools across Mnquma Municipality, which includes Centane, Ngqamakwe, and Gcuwa. Municipal officials, traditional leaders, and police have urged parents and residents to follow legal processes to safeguard young initiates and curb preventable deaths.
What Happened?
Mnquma Municipality convened community safety meeting in Centane. The session brought together local authorities, including Mnquma Municipality Speaker Ceba Monica Qaba, the Police Commissioner, and Initiation Forum Chairperson Nkosi Pat Tyali, alongside traditional surgeons, attendants, and civil organizations.
The meeting focused on eliminating illegal initiation schools operating in villages under Mnquma’s jurisdiction. Key resolutions included an appeal for parents and community members not to perform any pre-initiation rituals before their sons attend approved schools.
Traditional surgeons were also reminded to circumcise only registered initiates who have undergone mandatory medical screening, in line with provincial legislation.
Official Response
Speaker Ceba Monica Qaba reaffirmed the municipality’s stance on safety and accountability.
“Our priority is to protect the lives of young initiates. We cannot allow unregistered schools or unsafe practices to continue,” she said.
The Municipality also announced that initiation permits are now being issued at the Speaker’s Office, 60 Blyth Street in Gcuwa, next to Khanya FM.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the call for unity, noting that past tragedies had cast a shadow over a sacred cultural practice.
Community members also praised the Municipality for involving both traditional and government stakeholders.
