The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has issued a bold ultimatum to President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding swift action against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu or risk facing a national campaign of protest and disruption.

This development comes amid growing tensions between the ANC-led government and the Zuma-aligned MK Party, which accuses Mchunu of abusing his powers and allegedly targeting political opponents through state security structures.

According to reports, the MK Party is demanding Mchunu’s immediate removal, citing what it calls “unconstitutional overreach” and an “abuse of police powers” in recent months. The party claims Mchunu has orchestrated politically motivated operations, including surveillance and intimidation of MK-aligned activists.

Party leaders warned that failure to act decisively could result in “consequences the ANC cannot contain,” hinting at coordinated mass action across the country. “This is no longer a party issue—it’s a national concern,” said one MK Party spokesperson.

The ultimatum marks a new low in relations between the ANC and its former president Jacob Zuma, now the symbolic leader of the MK Party. Zuma’s faction continues to gain traction among disillusioned ANC voters and critics of Ramaphosa’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has not issued a formal response. However, sources close to the Union Buildings indicate that Ramaphosa is unlikely to be pressured into reshuffling his cabinet under threat.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu remains one of the most controversial figures in Ramaphosa’s administration, with critics questioning both his leadership style and the effectiveness of SAPS under his watch. While some civil society groups have also raised concerns about policing and accountability, others warn that political interference in security matters could worsen instability.

As the 2026 local elections approach, the rift between the ANC and the MK Party appears set to widen—fuelled by accusations, ultimatums, and growing populist rhetoric.
