The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has announced the precautionary suspension of its Deputy President and Parliamentary Leader, Dr. John Hlophe. The decision follows President Jacob Zuma’s return from Burkina Faso and consultations with the party’s national leadership regarding unapproved parliamentary actions.
What Happened
The MK Party confirmed that President Zuma met with the organization’s senior officials after his return from a successful diplomatic mission to Burkina Faso. During the briefing, he was informed about unauthorized leadership changes made at the National Assembly without proper collective consultation.
As a result, President Zuma decided to suspend Dr. Hlophe from both his roles with immediate effect, pending a full investigation into his conduct.
Official Response
In a statement, the MK Party’s Office of the Presidency said the move aims to reinforce discipline and uphold the principles of collective leadership across all party structures.
“This decision is meant to affirm and send a strong message on the principle of collective leadership within the MK Party,” the statement read.
The suspension also nullifies Dr. Hlophe’s decision to remove Collen Makhubele and appoint Des Van Rooyen in the National Assembly.
Magasela Mzobe, Head of Presidency, affirmed that the party remains united and committed to accountability and discipline as enshrined in its constitution.
