The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has issued a strong statement distancing itself from the recent visit by its Secretary General to the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church led by self-proclaimed prophet and fugitive Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi.

In a media statement dated 19 April 2025, the MK Party made it clear that the visit was not sanctioned, endorsed, or initiated by the party’s leadership or any of its official structures. According to the party, the Secretary General attended the church event in his personal capacity and without the mandate or knowledge of the MKP.

“The uMkhonto weSizwe Party upholds the rule of law and maintains a zero-tolerance stance on criminality in all its forms,” the statement read. “We reject any actions that compromise the reputation and ethical standing of our movement.”

The party highlighted its core values of integrity, justice, and accountability, reiterating that it does not support or associate with individuals who are fugitives from justice. It drew a pointed comparison to former President Jacob Zuma, stating that while Zuma served time after being imprisoned without trial, he did not flee from justice.

In a broader condemnation, the MKP denounced the exploitation of vulnerable communities, particularly innocent Christian believers. “Our Party stands with the victims of such exploitation and will never align itself with those who use religion as a shield to defraud, abuse or mislead the public,” it added.

The statement concluded with a call to all MK Party members and representatives to act in a manner that reflects the highest standards of responsibility and ethical leadership.
