Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has called for stronger national support for South Africa’s rangers, describing them as the country’s first line of defence against environmental crime and biodiversity loss.

Speaking at a World Ranger Day event at Table Mountain National Park, Minister George honoured the dedication of rangers, stating they face daily risks while protecting ecosystems, endangered species, and natural resources.

“They are not just patrol officers. They are defenders of climate stability, economic survival, and environmental justice,” said the Minister.

The threats they face are growing. Between January and June 2025, incidents included lion poaching, pangolin trafficking, vulture poisoning, and ongoing elephant and rhino horn theft. Forty suspects have already been arrested this year for targeting priority species.

Minister George emphasised that environmental crime is also an economic and security threat. To respond, SANParks has expanded its ranger workforce by 43% in two years, including 111 rangers now serving Table Mountain National Park. The Sea Air and Mountain Special Operations Unit has more than doubled in size and completed hundreds of patrols and emergency responses.

The Minister also committed to new tools for rangers  including drones, forensic support, canine teams, and digital surveillance systems to help dismantle organised smuggling operations.

The day’s programme included a ranger drill and a canine demonstration, showcasing the courage and skills required in the fight against environmental crimes.

“Rangers are not a footnote,” Minister George said. “You are the frontline. And we will stand with you.”
