Banyana Banyana is poised for a triumphant conclusion to their Third Round CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier clash against Tanzania as they square off at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday, 27 February 2024.
Following their commanding 3-0 victory in the first leg held in Tanzania, the Sasol-sponsored South African senior women’s team enters the return match brimming with confidence. The upcoming fixture also holds special significance as it marks a milestone for Jermaine Seoposenwe, who is set to become the 10th Banyana Banyana player to earn 100 international caps.
Coach Desiree Ellis commended Seoposenwe, highlighting her unwavering commitment and remarkable work ethic.
“I am genuinely thrilled for Jermaine; she has been an exemplary figure in South African football. Her dedication and consistent performance are commendable. Becoming the 10th player in Banyana Banyana to reach 100 caps is a testament to her hard work and dedication,” said Ellis.
Should Banyana Banyana progress to the Fourth Round of the Olympic qualifiers, they will face Nigeria, who emerged victorious against Cameroon in their Third Round encounter. Only two African nations will secure berths in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Commenting on the prospects in the subsequent round, Ellis stressed the importance of maintaining focus on the task at hand against Tanzania before contemplating future challenges.
“First and foremost, our priority is the match ahead. We must finish our business at home without becoming complacent. While a 3-0 lead seems comfortable, conceding the next goal could alter the dynamics. Our immediate goal is to secure victory, and once achieved, we will prepare to face whichever opponent awaits us,” explained Ellis.
Banyana Banyana concluded their preparations with a final training session on Monday afternoon.
The second leg fixture is scheduled to commence at 19:30 at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga and will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport Variety 4.
