What Happened
World Rugby has unveiled key details about the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, including a brand-new structure for the expanded 24-team tournament. The tournament will kick off on 1 October 2027 at Perth Stadium, with Australia playing in the opening match.
A major change is the addition of a Round of 16, replacing the previous direct progression from pool stages to quarter-finals.
The draw for the pools takes place on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, live from Sydney, and will determine the matchups for the group stage.
Tournament Format & Key Changes
- 24 teams, up from 20 in previous editions
- 6 pools of 4 teams each
- Top 2 teams from each pool progress to Round of 16
- 4 best third-place teams also progress
