Nearly ninety(90) men gathered at the Nature Reserve this 17 October for a Men’s Empowerment Session aimed at tackling gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting responsible fatherhood. The event, supported by local leaders and organizations, emphasized moral regeneration and community accountability.
WHAT HAPPENED
The Men’s Empowerment Session created a safe and open space for men to confront pressing social issues — from the rise in gender-based violence and femicide to the decline in positive male role models. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on their responsibilities as fathers and community figures.
Councillor Sandile Sello from the Alfred Nzo District Municipality urged men to “restore their dignity” and to reject behavior that “brings shame to families.” He stressed that self-respect is key to building respect for others.
Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Stuurman delivered a strong message, urging men to step up in campaigns against abuse. “Too few men attend these sessions,” he warned. “Silence from men on GBV is not strength — it’s part of the problem.”
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Both municipal leaders and advocacy groups reaffirmed their commitment to fighting gender-based violence. Mr. Jentile from Not In My Name and Mr. Mthabela echoed that “talking is no longer enough.” They called on men to take concrete action, pray together, and lead by example in their families and communities.
Local government officials pledged ongoing support for similar programs under the #BuildingBetterMatatieleTogether campaign, reinforcing that real change starts with personal accountability.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
The session has already sparked dialogue across Matatiele, especially as the region faces a troubling rise in GBV incidents. Many attendees expressed a renewed commitment to mentorship, moral leadership, and active participation in prevention campaigns.
Community organizers said follow-up sessions are being planned to ensure the momentum continues, with a focus on turning dialogue into daily action.
