Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has issued a stern warning to individuals spreading fear and intimidation through social media, threatening to shut down Mthatha and disrupt electioneering. A recent video circulating online, allegedly showing a man calling for a complete shutdown of Mthatha and halting election campaigns, has sparked outrage.
MEC Nqatha has assured the public that there will be no shutdown, and police are working to track down and bring to justice those responsible for the video and similar social media posts. He condemned these actions as “selfish, immature, and irresponsible” attempts to undermine the rule of law.
The MEC emphasized that such utterances insult the sacrifices of liberation struggle heroes and heroines, who fought for the right to vote and freedom of movement. He vowed that his departments, working closely with the police, will end taxi violence in the province without fear, favor, or siding with any parties involved.
Elections Will Proceed, Taxi Violence Will Be Addressed
MEC Nqatha’s warning comes after police confiscated pistols and assault rifles following a resurgence of taxi violence in Mthatha, Tsolo, and Maclear areas. The state is determined to ensure the safety and democratic rights of citizens, and will not allow fear mongers to disrupt the upcoming elections.
