Eastern Cape Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe handed over a tractor and farming implements to 85-year-old former liberation struggle fighter and community elder, Sipho Ndabana, on 17 November 2025. The handover took place in Senqu Local Municipality, where Ndabana continues to mentor young people through agricultural projects. Municipal leaders and dignitaries joined the ceremony to honour his lifelong service and ongoing contribution to the community.
What Happened
MEC Kontsiwe visited Senqu to support elder Sipho Ndabana, who remains active in farming and youth mentorship despite his age. She officially presented him with a brand-new tractor and its implements, aimed at boosting his production and strengthening his agricultural programmes.
Councillor Velile Stokhwe, the Mayor of Senqu Municipality, joined the MEC alongside other officials, community members, and local farmers.
One attendee said, “Bawo Ndabana inspires us. Even at 85, he still teaches the youth and works the land with pride.”
Official Response
MEC Kontsiwe said the gesture acknowledges Ndabana’s sacrifice during the liberation struggle and his commitment to community development. She emphasized that agriculture remains a key driver of rural growth and youth empowerment in the Eastern Cape.
The MEC said, “Elder Ndabana shows us that age does not limit purpose. We support him because he continues to build our communities through agriculture.”
Community Impact
The tractor handover is expected to improve Ndabana’s farming operations and expand opportunities for young people who train under him. Moreover, the intervention strengthens community agriculture programmes and supports local food security.
