While visiting Maletswai for the launch of the Festive Season Campaign Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta hosted a warm pre-Christmas luncheon for 50 senior citizens. The gathering celebrated their contributions and recognised their role in strengthening communities.
What Happened
MEC Fanta used her visit to honour older persons in Maletswai through a special luncheon. She handed over tokens of appreciation and expressed gratitude for the wisdom and stability seniors provide in their families and neighbourhoods.
The event acknowledged the importance of older persons in society, particularly those aged 60 and above who are protected under the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006. The Act promotes their well-being, safety and dignity.
Official Response
MEC Fanta stressed the importance of caring for older citizens, especially during the festive season.
She said, “It’s essential that we, as the community, give our elderly dignity, love and recognition especially towards this festive season.”
Community Impact
The luncheon offered seniors an opportunity to connect, feel valued and enjoy a moment of celebration ahead of the holidays. The initiative also reinforced government’s commitment to protecting and uplifting older persons through both policy and community engagement.
