A Musical Journey Rooted in Gauteng
Born Ismail Mohamed-Jan on 10 December 1949 in Benoni, Pops Mohamed built a career that spanned more than five decades. Gauteng proudly recognises him as one of its greatest cultural contributors.
Known affectionately as the “Minister of Music”, he mastered numerous instruments, including the kora, mbira, African mouth bow, didgeridoo, guitar and keyboard. His work elevated indigenous African music and made it accessible to audiences around the world.
A Guardian of African Musical Heritage
Throughout his career, Pops Mohamed dedicated himself to preserving, celebrating and advancing African musical traditions. He travelled widely, performing and teaching across South Africa, Europe and Asia. These efforts carried the sound of Gauteng to global stages while nurturing new generations of musicians.

The MEC extended condolences to the Mohamed-Jan family, the many artists mentored by Pops Mohamed, and all South Africans who mourn his passing.
