On the 20th of September 2025, Mdantsane laced up the Tourism Month as residents, families, and fitness groups answered a simple call: explore what’s on your doorstep. Under the theme “It’s time to explore, adore and sustain,” Buffalo City Tourism hosted an 8km hike that turned familiar streets and green corridors into a living gallery of local heritage and nature in Mdantsane.
Their Story
For many participants, the “Pholile side of Mdantsane” is more than a slogan, it’s the calm, proud feeling of walking the places that shaped them. Elders pointed out landmarks to younger hikers, runners slowed their pace to help first-timers, and neighbours swapped stories about hidden viewpoints and gathering spots. The hike reminded people that travel doesn’t have to be far or expensive to be meaningful.
The Event/Occasion
Buffalo City Tourism organised an 8km route designed to be accessible and community-friendly. Marshals guided groups, encouraged water breaks, and emphasized points of interest along the way. The aim was clear: spark domestic tourism by showcasing Mdantsane’s own attractions, while encouraging residents to protect and sustain the spaces they love.
Community Reactions
Smiles, selfies, and tired-but-happy legs told the story at the finish. Participants spoke about seeing Mdantsane with fresh eyes and making plans to return with friends. Local small businesses near the start and finish reported a welcome bump in foot traffic, and community groups asked for more regular, themed walks to keep the momentum going beyond Tourism Month.
