Mbhashe Local Municipality’s Special Programmes Unit (SPU) joined forces with Kwetha Operations and the Department of Education on the 17 October for a powerful educational and exam prayer seminar at the Dutywa TRC Hall. The event focused on learner safety, emotional well-being, and academic excellence, drawing participation from six local high schools.
WHAT HAPPENED
Led by Lilitha Ntsundwani, founder of Kwetha Operations and former learner of Nomaka Mbeki Technical Senior Secondary School, the seminar addressed pressing concerns about abuse within schools and the need for learners to know and defend their rights.
Ntsundwani shared that the campaign was born out of concern for the growing number of incidents involving misconduct by individuals in positions of trust. “Learners must feel safe to speak up,” Ntsundwani said. “Knowledge and courage are their strongest tools.”
A Facilitated Dialogue Session followed, featuring educators, government officials, alumni, and civil society leaders. The interactive panel encouraged open discussion about challenges in schools while promoting collaboration for safer learning environments.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Mbhashe Local Municipality Council Speaker, Councillor Babalwa Majavu, addressed learners directly with a message of empowerment. “No one has the right to touch you without your consent,” she said firmly. She urged students to report any inappropriate behaviour to trusted teachers or, if necessary, to external support organisations.
Municipal representatives reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote safety, dignity, and academic success across the district.
The seminar drew attendees from six schools — Nomaka Mbeki Technical Senior Secondary, Colosa Senior Secondary, J.S. Skenjana Senior Secondary, Mida School, Executive Academy, and Bomela Senior Secondary School — forming a strong alliance for youth protection and academic readiness.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
The initiative inspired learners to take charge of their safety and mental well-being as they prepare for final exams. Educators praised the event for creating a safe space to discuss sensitive issues and share strategies for supporting vulnerable learners.
Organisers confirmed that similar outreach programs will continue under the #MbhasheCares campaign, aiming to build safer, more resilient school communities across the region.
