Winnie Madikizela Local Municipality Mayor Councilor T.D. Mafumbata handed over a R1.61-million road upgrade project to the community at Lucwaba Junior Secondary School. The 2.4km rebuild commences on 21 November 2025 at Giniswayo, ward 11, in Bizana, and aims to address dangerous road conditions, particularly during heavy summer rains.
What Happened?
Mayor Mafumbata led the handover at Giniswayo, confirming that Last Number Project, a Bizana-based construction company led by Director Mpangesi, will build the new road.
The project will run for two months, with teams expected to work consistently through the summer season. The mayor said she trusts the company based on its strong track record of previous work.
The initiative also brings local hiring opportunities, prioritizing residents of Ward 11 — especially youth with Grade 12 or higher qualifications.
Wage Breakdown:
- Labourers: R250 per day
- Security: R6 000 per month
(Other salaries were not disclosed.) - Official Response
Mayor Mafumbata said she was excited to finally bring relief to a community that has struggled with damaged roads and unsafe travel.
“This project reflects our commitment to improving daily life here in Giniswayo. We trust the appointed company to deliver quality work and to hire locally,” she said.
Training for new workers begins immediately, with teams set to report on 21 November 2025.

Community Impact
Residents welcomed the project, calling it a long-overdue development that will boost safety, transport access, and household livelihoods. According to community leaders, the road upgrade will not only support travel but also open new job opportunities for unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers.
Security staff will also be drawn from the community to ensure that the site operates safely and without disruptions.
“We are happy and grateful. This project will change our daily movement and help young people find work,” said one resident after the meeting.
