The Executive Mayor of Mbhashe Local Municipality, Dr Samkelo Janda, led a climate change awareness campaign at the Madwaleni community hall in Elliotdale on 9 December 2025.
The campaign aimed to educate residents about the growing effects of climate change and to empower them with practical knowledge to respond and adapt. Municipality officials said the outreach supports their commitment to environmental sustainability and the protection of vulnerable communities facing extreme weather.
Residents were guided through key climate risks. These include drought, flooding, soil erosion, rising temperatures, and the impact these changes have on agriculture, livelihoods, and local infrastructure.
By engaging directly with the community, the municipality ensured people understood both the causes of climate change and the steps they can take to reduce its effects.
Encouraging Sustainable Practices in Rural Communities
Dr Janda encouraged residents who are involved in rural recycling initiatives. He said their work plays an important role in protecting the environment.
“By collecting plastics, papers and scrap metal, you are contributing significantly to climate change mitigation and reducing air pollution while supporting the green economy,” he said.
He added that clean, well-managed communities create economic opportunities. Investors, he said, are more likely to support places that prioritise environmental care and sustainable development.
Mike Denison from WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) also attended the event. WESSA focuses on conservation, environmental education, and promoting sustainable practices across the country.
Recognition for Local Beaches and Support for Schools
WESSA presented certificates to three Elliotdale beaches that met standards for safety, environmental education, and environmental management. The awarded beaches are Cwebe, Qatywa and Lubanzi.
The Executive Mayor also handed over dustbins to Gwebindlala J.S.S, donated by Polyco, to encourage cleaner school environments and better waste management practices.
