The Matatiele Local Municipality, led by Mayor Motlalepula Stuurman, met with traditional leaders, Mbhashe Municipality, MK Veterans, the ANC Veterans League, NGOs, CBOs, BOLD, and the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture on 17 November 2025. The session focused on honouring struggle veterans and preserving the region’s historical legacy. Veteran leader Tata Jafta also delivered a historical reflection on Matatiele’s role during apartheid and the contributions of key stalwarts.
What Happened
Leaders gathered to discuss the protection and preservation of the history linked to Matatiele’s role in the liberation struggle. Tata Jafta emphasized the work of stalwarts such as the late Ntate Khorong Koali and Tata Dumisani Matandela. He stressed that Matatiele played a crucial role during apartheid and urged leaders to visit and support the families of these veterans.
The meeting also unpacked ways to strengthen collaboration between municipalities, veterans’ groups, heritage organisations and community structures.
One participant said, “We owe it to our communities to keep this history alive and protect the stories of those who fought for freedom.”
Official Response
Municipal leadership said the engagement was essential for strengthening local heritage efforts. They confirmed that a working plan was developed to guide future programmes focused on preserving veterans’ legacies. Officials added that the session allowed stakeholders to reflect on history and build a unified approach to heritage work.
A municipal spokesperson said, “This collaboration ensures that we honour our veterans properly and pass their stories to future generations.”

The meeting’s outcomes are expected to reinforce heritage preservation across Matatiele.
Moreover, the newly formed Joint Action Plan will help communities document, celebrate and safeguard the contributions of local struggle icons.
