Matatiele Local Municipality is taking a firm stand against the rise in Gender-Based Violence. The municipality hosted a community dialogue at Mpharane Community Hall as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The event brought together the Department of Social Development, Thuthuzela Care Centre, SAPS, Home Affairs and civil society groups.
The dialogue created a safe space for residents to speak openly. Community members shared concerns, asked questions and raised alarm about increasing violence in the area. Many said the silence around GBV must end. Others stressed that protection and justice must reach every household.
Participants said the rise in GBV, rape and murder demands urgent, coordinated action. They called for stronger reporting systems, faster response times and deeper community involvement.
A Campaign That Drives Change
The 16 Days of Activism campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December each year. It aims to raise awareness about the impact of violence on women, children and families. For years, the campaign has strengthened efforts to prevent abuse and support survivors.
A Theme Calling for Unity
This year’s theme, “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys, and Girls Working Together to End Gender-Based Violence and Femicide,” reinforces the need for collective responsibility. Speakers said meaningful change requires everyone. Households, schools, churches and local organisations must all play a role.
Officials at the event encouraged residents to report abuse early. They also urged families to support victims and to challenge harmful behaviour in their communities.
Where to Get Help
Residents were reminded to report suspected abuse to the nearest police station or social worker. They can also contact:
- Crime Stop: 086 00 10111
- GBV Command Centre (24-Hour Hotline): 0800 428 428
The municipality says it will continue supporting awareness programmes, survivor services and community education throughout the campaign.
