In a touching show of community support, officials from the Matatiele Correctional Centre today made a significant impact at Cross Roads Children’s Home by donating clothes, shoes, and even painting the facility. This home provides care for destitute children ranging from newborns to 18-year-olds.
Khuthala Xaki, the Centre Manager of Cross Roads Children’s Home, expressed her gratitude for the visit from the Department of Correctional Services, noting the positive effect it had on the children and staff alike.
“We are very ecstatic about the visit and the support we’ve received. It has lifted our spirits and brought smiles to the faces of the children,” said Xaki.
Nkanyiso Mthembu, Head of the Matatiele Correctional Centre, emphasized that the gesture was driven by a deep sense of philanthropy. “I always encourage my officials to give back to the community and make a difference where we live and work. When this home came to mind, we agreed that we must do something meaningful for these children in need,” Mthembu explained. “I am very proud to lead this team of winners who never hesitate to dig deep into their pockets to help others.”
The Department of Correctional Services in the Kokstad Management Area, which includes Matatiele, Ebongweni Super Maximum, Kokstad Medium, and Port Shepstone Correctional Centres, is renowned for its community outreach initiatives. These include building houses for the needy, supporting frail care and destitute homes, and donating sanitary pads to school children.
“We believe that with what we earn, we can make a difference in someone’s life,” Mthembu added, underscoring the department’s commitment to social responsibility and community upliftment.
The visit to Cross Roads Children’s Home is part of the Correctional Services’ broader efforts to engage with and support the local community, reinforcing their role not just as custodians of justice but as active participants in social development.
