The Matatiele Local Municipality is proudly honouring women making an impact during Women’s Month highlighting the inspiring story of Philiswa “Philz” Nonkevu, who currently serves as Manager in the municipality’s Budget and Treasury office.
Born in Makomorweng and a former learner at Cerdaville Public School, Philz began her journey in 2010 as an intern in the finance division. Her path was far from easy. After completing matric, her mother could not afford university fees. Thanks to funding from NSFAS, she enrolled at Walter Sisulu University, earning a Bachelor of Accounting degree.
Between 2008 and 2010, she worked at a local fruit and vegetable shop while applying for jobs. Her perseverance eventually paid off when she was accepted into the municipality.
Philz believes success requires humility, determination, and a clear sense of purpose. Speaking during Women’s Month, she encourages women to believe in themselves:
“It is possible. We must play our part in making a difference in the spaces where God has placed us.”
She urges women to take up leadership roles, particularly in municipal finance, where more female voices are needed.
